Three ways to make Mahjong yours.
The same draw-and-discard rhythm, with very different decisions. These are the specific presets available on Mahjong Planet; local and tournament rules can differ.
Compare the three variants
Riichi Mahjong
Closed-hand tension, riichi declarations, yaku and dora. If you know Mahjong Soul, this is the familiar starting point.
- 136 tiles; three red fives in our preset
- A legal win needs at least one yaku
- Interactive lessons, puzzles and computer review
- Standard and Relaxed share one Riichi rating
Hong Kong Old Style
Build familiar runs and triplets, collect flowers and seasons, and reach the table's minimum hand value.
- 144 tiles including flowers and seasons
- Three-faan minimum; thirteen-faan cap
- Automatic scoring and completed-game replay
- A separate Hong Kong rating
Sichuan Blood Battle
Exchange three tiles, choose a missing suit and race to win. The remaining players continue after the first winner leaves the hand.
- 108 suited tiles; no honors or chow calls
- Clear your missing suit; three-fan cap
- Local computer practice without an account
- A separate Sichuan rating
Which should I learn first?
Choose Riichi if you want our most guided learning path: lessons, a teaching hand, puzzles and computer review. Choose Hong Kong if you already know that style from friends or family, and compare their house rules with our preset first.
Choose Sichuan if you want to focus on just the three numbered suits and enjoy the idea that the hand continues after a win. Fewer tile types do not remove the strategy: exchanging tiles, choosing a missing suit and managing payments still matter.
Coming from Mahjong Soul?
Start in the Riichi lobby. Our current preset has three red fives and allows open All Simples. Check the rules page before your first rated game rather than assuming every option matches your usual table.
Quick Play is rated. Computer opponents may fill empty seats and are labelled. Standard and Relaxed clocks contribute to the same Riichi rating; Hong Kong and Sichuan each have their own rating.
Friends, computers or the public lobby
All three online lobbies offer public tables, invitations for friends and computer opponents. Create a free account to join. Quick Play can fill empty seats with computers after about 15 seconds.
Riichi has computer analysis as well as replay. Hong Kong and Sichuan have replay and scoring details, but do not currently offer computer analysis. You can try the Riichi example review before playing a game.
